Members of the Evesham Township Police Department helped to kick off the Summer Games of the NJ Special Olympics. The department’s honor guard participated in the opening ceremonies at the College of New Jersey in Ewing, New Jersey. It is the 50th anniversary of the Special Olympics and the 35th anniversary of the Law Enforcement Torch Run that several members of the Evesham Township Police Department participated in earlier in the day.
There are approximately 2,500 athletes competing in various sporting events over the weekend. The mission of the NJ Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The goal is to offer continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
